Agency industry statistics for 2026, with sources

Last updated: Published by Tim Kilroy

There are more than 71,000 digital agencies in North America, and 93% of marketing services firms say their growth engine is not strong enough.

Tim Kilroy collects the published statistics that matter for founder-led agencies. Every figure below belongs to its named source, not to Tim Kilroy, and is quoted with its conditions.

The question

How many digital agencies are there, and how are they doing?

North America counts more than 71,000 digital agencies, up from about 50,000 in 2024 checks, and the global market exceeds 200,000, according to Promethean Research (opens in a new tab). The sector is fragmented: 87% of North American firms employ fewer than 50 people. Profitability is under pressure: the average digital agency earned a 13% after-tax net margin in 2025, down from a long-run average of about 15% since 2015, per Haus Advisors (opens in a new tab).

What it means

What these numbers mean for a $1M to $5M agency

A crowded market of small firms, thinner margins, and weak growth engines point to the same conclusion: the agencies that grow are the ones that stop depending on referrals and founder instinct. The coaching figures are self-reported by survey respondents and come from broad samples, not agencies specifically, so treat them as context rather than a promise.

FAQ

Questions about the numbers

Is consulting replaced by AI?
Not wholesale, but AI is changing how agencies deliver and price work. The 2026 Promethean Research Digital Agency Industry Report found 33% of agencies have fully implemented AI, with 48.5% exploring. Tim Kilroy writes about what happens to agency pricing when AI makes delivery faster, and offers AI-powered tools such as Call Lab and Discovery Lab that support, rather than replace, human judgment. Why don’t referrals scale?
Referrals arrive because of what you have done in the past and how you treated your network, so you cannot decide to get more of them this month. Tim Kilroy notes that referrals are wonderful right up until the month they do not show up. RSW/US reports 75% of agencies name referrals as their top new business source, yet 93% say their growth engine is not strong enough. In the full FAQ
Is it worth it to hire a marketing agency?
It is worth it when the agency understands your business well enough to change an outcome you care about. Tim Kilroy coaches agencies on exactly this point: clients stay with agencies that show deep understanding of their market, constraints, and how success is measured. If an agency cannot describe your problem in your own words, keep looking. In the full FAQ
Is content marketing the same as lead generation?
No. Lead generation catches the hand that is already raised; content builds demand so your name comes to mind when a buyer finally needs help. Tim Kilroy’s content playbook cites Ehrenberg-Bass Institute and LinkedIn B2B Institute research that 95% of B2B buyers are not in the market at any given time, which is why content has to work long before a buyer is ready. What is agency consulting?
Agency consulting is outside help for the owner of a service agency: diagnosing what is stalling growth and installing systems to fix it. Tim Kilroy focuses on four areas for marketing and other agencies: positioning, demand generation, sales process, and operations. He reports coaching more than 300 agencies and brings over 25 years of agency and marketing experience to that work. In the full FAQ
